In the aftermath of natural disasters – including floods – the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity becomes an even more important facet in helping those who have lost their homes rebuild and re-locate into a new one.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee was directly impacted by the historic flood. The Food Bank lost about 50,000 pounds of refrigerated food due to power outages in Metro Center and was not able to operate out of their building for several days after the flood. With the help of staff and volunteers, all disaster relief emergency food boxes were relocated to another facility. Second Harvest is now back in their warehouse and has distributed more than 250,000 pounds of food to people in need since the floods.

Roughstock’s Editor, Matt Bjorke, states, “When I realized how devastating the two days of rain on May 1 and 2 were to my Nashville area neighbors, I immediately wanted to help any way I could. Using Roughstock as a platform and partnering with Country Angel’s Network has allowed me to help out the best possible way. Enlisting friends and artists in the community, I am proud that we’re hosting this benefit for Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee and the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity. With so many people needing the help, these two great programs will help reach many people as they recover from the floods. The spirit of the Nashville community and all of Tennessee is heartening and truly shows why we live in the Volunteer State."

Country Angel’s Network CEO, Estella Pan, agrees. “Perhaps the most beautiful thing to emerge from this tragedy is seeing everyone join forces and continue to help each other in the aftermath.”

The “Rebuilding Nashville” campaign fits hand in hand with the Country Angel’s Network holding mission, which is to host annual online auctions and fundraising campaigns to benefit children, families, and communities with an immediate financial need at hand. Like many, Estella was deeply shaken by the damaging flood that tore through middle Tennessee, including Nashville. “It was important to both Matt and I that the funds raised in our campaign stay IN Tennessee to directly benefit those in the community whose homes and lives were affected by the flood.”

Country Angel’s Network and Roughstock Initiate “Rebuilding Nashville” Campaign!
May 10, 2010
Nashville, TN (May 10, 2010) – In light of the devastating flood that tore through middle Tennessee on May 1 – 2, Country Angel’s Network and Roughstock are joining forces in launching a new flood relief campaign! Two organizations have been chosen as co-beneficiaries in the “Rebuilding Nashville” campaign: Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee AND the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity.

A ChipIn! widget has been posted on both the Country Angel’s Network AND Roughstock websites. Patrons are invited to send donations for the “Rebuilding Nashville” campaign by clicking on the widget; these donations will be processed through PayPal.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s facility was one of many buildings that were in the direct line of the flood. Currently without electricity, the staff continues to salvage as much of their previously stored food as possible as they simultaneously seek a new location.

In the aftermath of natural disasters – including floods – the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity becomes an even more important facet in helping those who have lost their homes rebuild and re-locate into a new one.

Country Angel’s Network CEO, Estella Pan, shares her thoughts about the new campaign. “My mission for Country Angel’s Network has always been to host annual online auctions and fundraising campaigns to benefit children, families, and communities with an immediate financial need at hand.” She continues, “The aftermath of any natural disasters is detrimental in and of itself. When the people affected are your personal friends, the urgency to help becomes even more heightened. It was important to both Matt and I that the raised funds stay IN Tennessee to directly benefit those in the community whose homes and lives were affected by the flood.”

Roughstock’s Editor, Matt Bjorke, agrees. "While I was blessed and lucky enough to survive the floods with minimal damage to my home and possessions, I know that many others, including quite a few of my friends in Nashville, were not so lucky. In an effort to help as many folks in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area, I'm happy to be able to put forth my time to help the area recover.” He adds, “When choosing who to donate the funds from this campaign, we felt it was best to try and keep it as local as possible. With that in mind, I am happy we've chosen the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity. Both organizations provide tremendous support for local families without much fanfare and in this time of need, their services provide a lot of comfort to folks who are at a loss as to how they will recover from this event."

Country Angel’s Network Defies Economic Odds With Record-Breaking Event!
Mar 30, 2010
Nashville, TN (March 30, 2010) – While many businesses met their demise in 2009 as the nation continues to struggle and regain its economic footing, Country Angel’s Network triumphantly closed out their most successful event to date! Their 13th Annual Country Angel’s Network Online Charity Auction raised $1,900 for Hope Outreach Center, the auction’s receiving beneficiary!

Located in Douglas, Georgia, Hope Outreach Center is run by a group of volunteers with the majority of their funding coming from patron donations. They do not receive grants from the government.

Evidence of financial hardship was felt throughout the duration of this event. Country Angel’s Network founder and CEO, Estella Pan, shares, “In recent years, we have seen the cumulative total nearing $1,000 after the first four weeks of launching an auction. This year, it took nearly two months for that to happen. Having that said,” she adds, “we were also very blessed to have several individuals who bid on items and sent monetary donations for the simple reason of supporting a worthy cause.”

The auction picked up major steam through November and December as many prepared for the holiday season. In addition, several artists including Danielle Peck, Bridgette Tatum, and Sugarland personally reached out to their fans on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, encouraging them to bid and send donations. These posts coupled with key media coverage in outlets including AOL’s The Boot, GACtv.com, Country Aircheck, and Country Weekly generated significant buzz toward the event.

By far, the single item that accrued the most bids was the guitar donated by Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, of Sugarland! The auction listing for the beautiful never-played-before Epiphone guitar accumulated 1,375 total page views, and after 52 bids, was purchased at an astronomical $1,625.00!!

A mass check has been mailed to Vernon and Angela Talkington, co-founders of Hope Outreach Center! Funds will be used toward purchasing a large shipment of food for their food bank. In a thank you letter to Country Angel’s Network, Angela writes, “There have been many, many people in our community who have lost their jobs due to the closing of a major company here and this will go a long way to help them and their families survive through these tough times.” She continues, “Our requests for food and other assistance have risen by 60% over the past year. Thank you so much for your concern for people who struggle with the basic needs of life. God bless you.”

Country Angel’s Network events are held annually! For additional information on Country Angel’s Network auctions and updates on all past beneficiaries, please visit www.starcountrymedia.com.

About Hope Outreach Center:

Hope Outreach Center operates out of Douglas, Georgia, aiding the Oak Park community in Coffee County. Oak Park would be best described as a distressed neighborhood – in essence, it is an inner-city situation in a smaller population. Oak Park has the highest rate of criminal activity in Coffee County, especially those in the nature of violent crimes and drug related offenses. Many of the families there live in extreme poverty (less than $6,000 a year), and 85% of the children live in a home without a father.

Hope Outreach Center has a mission to do everything they can to ensure that these children are safe, fed, educated, and live in adequate housing. Some of the services they provide include: daily evening meals, laundry facilities, drug and alcohol prevention, parenting classes, drama and choir classes, after school programs, tutoring, GED classes, food distributions, clothing assistance, and more! The couple concedes that “many people are not looking for a hand out, but a hand up.” Angela, adds, “You just never know who will come through those doors each day.”

Vernon and Angela Talkington founded the Hope Outreach Center in 1998. The couple was vacationing the previous year and had attended a revival celebration with friends. During the celebration, the couple noticed there was a group of children running around the area who didn’t seem to belong anywhere. They sought to help this community. Taking a leap of faith, the Talkingtons sold all of their belongings and relocated to Douglas, Georgia, where they still live today and run Hope Outreach Center, alongside a group of dedicated volunteers.

Hope Outreach Center has never received any government grants; therefore, donations are greatly appreciated! A constant supply of clothes, food, school supplies, among other necessities are available for those who come through the doors at Hope Outreach Center.
